PE and Health and Fitness

Year 7

All students cover a variety of sporting areas to develop their overall competence and understanding of sport. All lessons encourage students to be active participants in sport, both in and outside of school and aim to embed the importance of following a healthy and active lifestyle. Extra-curricular sport takes place every lunchtime and after school. Students will perform in a variety of sports including football, netball, badminton, basketball, rugby, dance/gymnastics, athletics and striking and fielding. They will learn the fundamental skills of all sports mentioned which will enable them to develop their knowledge and understanding to be able to apply them effectively and successfully in competitive situations.

Year 8

All students continue to cover a variety of sporting areas to develop their overall competence and understanding of sport. All lessons encourage students to be active participants in sport, both in and outside of school and aim to embed the importance of following a healthy and active lifestyle. Students will revisit sports covered in year 7: netball, football, basketball, badminton, dance/gymnastics, orienteering, striking and fielding, athletics, to further develop skills, knowledge and understanding in them. New sports will also be introduced: hockey and handball, which build on the fundamental games skills they covered in year 7. Students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively to experiment with strategies and tactics as they develop their game play, and understanding rules for officiating in a range of sports.

Year 9

Year 9 students experience a wide variety of sports throughout the academic year, with a particular focus on students applying the skills they have learned in previous years to competitive game situations. Further emphasis will be on mental and physical well-being, through concepts such as self-discipline, resilience and competition. Students will be encouraged to be reflective learners and work on strategies for improvement. They will develop their skills and knowledge with a focus on teamwork and communication, through teaching team games such as rugby, football, netball and handball. We aim to develop confidence and leadership skills in all lessons.

Students are encouraged to take ownership of their own learning by being provided with opportunities to coach their own small groups in specific drills and activities. By leading their own groups through sport specific skill drills, there is a greater opportunity for students to analyse their own, and the performance of others. To do this successfully, students will gain a deeper understanding of rules and tactics which can be applied to these sports. These opportunities will allow our students to embed within themselves the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle throughout the rest of their lives.

Year 10 Core PE

All students follow a core PE lesson for at least one hour a week. Students follow the core values of Colne Primet Academy’s Physical Education Department where they have the opportunity to work towards meeting key criteria in performance, leadership, officiating and fitness. Students will build upon their overall physical literacy, competence and understanding of sport, that they developed in KS3. Further emphasis will be placed on mental and physical well-being, through concepts such as self-discipline, resilience and competition. Students will be encouraged to be reflective learners and work on further strategies for improvement.

Students will experience a wide range of sports during the year, which includes football, netball, badminton, Aussie Rules, basketball, fitness, handball athletics, rounders, cricket and softball. Students are also encouraged to work towards these values in their own free time and in extracurricular clubs which run at the Academy. Students will be given the opportunity to lead small groups and take an officiating role within lessons, this approach will allow students to analyse their own performance and that of their peers.

In KS4, the aim is to equip students with the skills and confidence to continue participating in sport when they leave school as a performer, volunteer and/or official and to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

Year 11 Core PE

Students take more of an active role in the delivery of all aspects of PE lessons and are encouraged to contribute towards each of the criteria as a performer, official, leader and volunteer/event organisers. They perform in a variety of sports which will run on an option basis. This is to ensure that students are engaged in their performance in sport as they begin to form choices of their preferred choices. We aim to foster confidence by embedding skills and knowledge of performing, officiating, and organising tournaments and competitions in these sports, so they will go on to participate in sport when they leave school.

Students will choose sports from categories so they are still accessing a range of sports in their curriculum. These will be invasion 1 and invasion 2, net games, fitness, fun and will finish in some interform competitions based on sports day activities before they leave school.

Students are also taught to value the well-being benefits of participating in physical activity regularly, especially during the demanding time of mock and final exams. Fun aspects will be covered to ensure that students realise the positive effect physical activity can have on you, including sports such as dodgeball, benchball and fun sports day style sessions as they begin their final exams. Students should leave the school feeling confident in their ability to participate in leisure or organised sport and further their involvement as a way to stay fit and healthy throughout their adult life.

GCSE PE Year 10

The aim of GCSE PE is designed to help students develop thier understanding and knowledge through practical involvement in sporting and physical activities.Students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to design their own Personal Exercise Program (PEP) which allows them to improve their own performance in their chosen sport. Taking GCSE PE has many benefits including:

  • Real applied focus where students will be encouraged to put the theory they are learning into context and apply what they have learned to their own practical performance.
  • Reflecting today’s global world – the issues and topics students will learn about are up to date and will help them understand some of the key global influences in the world of sport today.
  • Gaining a well-rounded understanding of PE – through an engaging introduction to the world of PE, sport and sport science, students will begin to appreciate how the human body allows us to perform amazing sporting feats and how fitness and physical training contribute to a healthy lifestyle, as well as improved performance.

GCSE PE Year 11

The aim of this year in GCSE PE is to prepare students for their final examinations in practical, theory and their controlled assessment. Students will continue with the Edexcel award and complete their PEP which is a personalised exercise programme, focusing on improving their play in a sport of their choice through the focus on a relevant component of fitness, which equates to 10% of the course. Students will be examined in 3 sports after completing an audit of their highest achieving sports. They will then be moderated on their performance of skills and application and be given a score for the practical element which equates to 30% of the course. In theory lessons, students will be covering component 2 which focusses on a health, fitness and exercise, as well as diet, sports psychology and social issues in sport. The two written exam papers will be sat in May/June so revision will be completed to help students prepare at the latter end of year 11. On completion of this course, students will have planned, carried out and reviewed their own coaching session and will have the required skills to do this in future careers or for leisure purposes.

NCFE Level Health and Fitness Year 10

This qualification is designed for learners who want an introduction to Health and Fitness that includes a vocational and project-based element. The qualification will appeal to learners who wish to pursue a career in the Health and Fitness sector or progress onto further study. In year 10 students will focus on the main body systems, the effects of health & fitness, components of fitness, principles of training, fitness testing and the impact of lifestyle. There are no formal assessments undertaken during year 10. The emphasis is on the delivery of course content, students will be assessed using end of unit tests after the delivery of each topic.

NCFE PE Year 11

Students gain a greater insight into the health and fitness sector and are provided with the opportunity to acquire a number of practical of technical skills as they progress into the final stages of the course.

Students will utilize their knowledge of the structure and functions of body systems and identify the effects of health and fitness activities on the body. Students will apply their understanding of components of fitness and principles of training to explain how performers can improve their health and fitness. This then leads to students completing fitness tests to allow them to analyse their own fitness levels to enable them to set goals to improve and plan their own health and fitness programme to improve their performances.

Students will then utilise and apply their knowledge from Year 10 and 11 to complete their Non-Exam Assessment, before completing their final examination.
