Spanish

Year 7

Students will start their introduction to Spanish after October half term.  We will look at El día de los Muertos which is a famous Mexican festival.  Students will learn why and how it is celebrated and will try designing their own colourful skull decoration.  This first half term of Spanish will be looking at basic personal information, such as introducing yourself, saying how old you are, where you live and when your birthday is.  We will also briefly talk about families and the people in them.  To finish this half term we will look at how Christmas is celebrated in Spanish speaking countries.

After Christmas, students will start to increase their grammatical knowledge.  We will talk about pets and introduce the concept of masculine and feminine nouns, then we will link this with adjectives and how they can change according to the gender of the noun.  Continuing with adjectives we will learn how to describe ourselves and others.

The second half of the spring term is focused on opinions.  Students will learn how to give their opinion on a range of topics, such as food and drink, school subjects, sports and even their favourite (or not so favourite) teachers.  We will also justify their opinions with a range of reasons.

Summer term begins with students talking about sports and free time.  We will learn about the verbs ‘jugar’ and ‘hacer’ which are used with a variety of different sports.  We will be able to say which sports they do, who with and how often.  We will also talk about the weather and combine it with free time activities to be able to say what we do when it is raining, sunny, windy etc.

The second half of the summer term has an emphasis on future plans.  Students will learn how to form the near future tense and will use it to talk about what they are going to do next weekend, where they are going on holiday next year, what they are going to do and their future educational plans.

Throughout each topic students will develop the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking and be assessed each half term on at least one of these skills.  By the end of year 7 all students should be able to ask and answer a range of simple questions on the topics covered.  They should be getting more confident with describing a photo and be developing translating skills.  They should also be able to write up to 40 words on a range of the topics covered.  Some will be able to write 40+ words.
