    What is it?

A software programme that we use which promotes reading for pleasure and encourages students to use reading to learn.

    • It raises literacy standards and hopefully will develop a lifelong love of reading.
    • Works on your child’s reading age by testing them at the start.
    • Suggests books for them to read within their reading age level.
    • Checks their comprehension by quizzing them on completion.
    • Continues to challenge.
    • Can provide us with important diagnostic information about skills development.
    • Allows us to monitor their reading development, habits and comprehension.

What will my child have to do?

Students in Year 7-9 will be expected to read for 15-20 minutes a day as part of their homework routine. When they have completed reading their book they must take a quiz on their book as soon as they can whilst it is still fresh in their mind. They should not wait until their reading lesson to do this. Oracle is open before school, break, lunch and after school and students can quiz at these times any day of the week.

As we monitor students’ progress and engagement with reading on a weekly basis, we can see where we need to intervene to support students and get them back on track. If this needs to happen students will attend an Accelerated Reader Catch Up session which allows them to read, quiz and select reading material under the guidance of their Head of Year and the librarian. Equally, many of our students are rewarded for their engagement in reading. This may be book tokens, books, bookmarks, certificates and Primet positives, plus a whole range other incentives.

In addition to their independent reading, students also have a weekly reading lesson based in Oracle with their English teacher and the librarian. This supports the opportunity to discuss reading with students, support book selection and quizzing and share interesting books students may have read. Oracle is incredibly well resourced and has an array of children’s and young adult fiction for students to enjoy.
