Safeguarding & Welfare

Colne Primet Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its students. Each student’s welfare is of paramount importance. We recognise that some children may be especially vulnerable to abuse. We recognise that children who are abused or neglected may find it difficult to develop a sense of self-worth and to view the world in a positive way. We recognise that some children who have experienced abuse may harm others or be at further risk to themselves. We will always take a considered and sensitive approach so that we can support all of our students.

For any urgent Safeguarding concerns please phone the main office on 01282 863970 and speak to a member of the admin team who will ensure you speak to one of the Safeguarding Team. For anything that does not need an immediate response, please email:

Mr Thomas, DSL, cthomas@colneprimet.co.uk

Ms Marston, DSL, amarston@colneprimet.co.uk

Mrs Eaton, Deputy DSL, aeaton@colneprimet.co.uk

The Academy is committed to the health and wellbeing of both learners and staff and fully recognises the contribution it can make to protect and support them.

Safeguarding at the Academy includes all aspects of school life, including:

  • Learner health, safety and welfare
  • Bullying
  • Harassment and discrimination, including hate crime and racist abuse
  • Staff recruitment
  • Meeting the needs of students with medical conditions
  • Alcohol, drug and substance misuse
  • Educational visits
  • E-safety
  • Preventing violent extremism
  • The security and safety of the Academy site
  • Issues which may be specific to the local area or population, for example child sexual exploitation.

The Academy is committed to identifying where there are concerns regarding our students and taking action to address them in partnership with appropriate organisations. There are 3 main elements to ensuring the health and well-being of our students, which are:

Prevention

All staff at the Academy aim to provide a caring, positive, safe and stimulating environment that promotes the social, physical and moral development of the individual student.

Protection

Staff are trained and supported to respond appropriately and sensitively to Safeguarding and Child Protection concerns or disclosures.

Support

For students and staff where there is a safeguarding or child protection issue, the Academy will ensure there is adequate arrangements in place to identify, assess and support students’ suffering harm.

Key personnel within the Academy who have specific responsibilities under Child Protection procedures are the Designated Safeguarding Lead (Deputy Principal) and the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads. There is also a Designated Governor. The Principal has overall responsibility for Safeguarding and Child Protection and ensures reports to Governors are made on a regular basis.

Operation Encompass operates in all police forces across England. It helps police and schools work together to provide emotional and practical help to children. The system ensures that when police are called to an incident of domestic abuse, where there are children in the household who have experienced the domestic incident, the police will inform the key adult (usually the designated safeguarding lead) in school before the child or children arrive at school the following day. This ensures that the school has up to date relevant information about the child’s circumstances and can enable immediate support to be put in place, according to the child’s needs.

As part of our commitment to keeping children safe, we are proud to be part of Operation Encompass.Being part of Encompass means our school will receive a notification from Lancashire Police before the start of the next school day when a child or young person has been involved in or exposed to a domestic abuse incident the previous day. The information is given in confidence to the Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL) and will enable us to provide the best possible support for the child and family.

More information about the scheme and how schools can become involved is available on the Operation Encompass website (click the image above).

It can be hard to know what to do if you’re worried someone close is expressing extreme views or hatred, which could lead to them harming themselves or others. Working with other organisations, the police protect vulnerable people from being exploited by extremists through a Home Office programme called Prevent. Act early and tell them your extremism and radicalisation concerns in confidence. You won’t be wasting their time and you won’t ruin lives, but you might save them.
